Fake professor who claimed Ndambiri stole Sh138m detained

A man said to have impersonated as a University don will remain in police custody for two more days before taking plea to enable police to complete investigations.
When the matter came for a mention on Tuesday, July 21, the investigating officer Inspector Godfrey Murugu applied for additional time, saying they had received more criminal complaints against the suspect, ‘Professor’ Michael Mwachodzi wa Mwachofi.
“We have recorded more complaints from as far as Kwale, Nandi and Pangani in Nairobi and since we have already covered over 80 per cent of the investigations, two more days will be adequate to complete the remaining bit,” the officer told Senior Resident Magistrate P.M. Mugure.
The suspect presented himself to Kirinyaga Deputy Governor Peter Ndambiri as Professor Michael Mwachodzi wa Mwachofi, the Head of the Homeland Educational International Project.
He allegedly told Ndambiri his project was a subsidiary of the DLAMS, International, an NGO that helps schools and students from low income areas to use technology in improving their academic projects.
The said Mwachofi was later arrested after he falsely implicated Ndambiri with an alleged loss of Sh138 million meant for the e-learning program for Kirinyaga County.
The suspect also told a local daily that some of the lost money had been stashed in accounts belonging to two of Ndambiri’s children, allegations Ndambiri vehemently denied.
On Tuesday, when the matter came up for a mention, Murugu successfully asked SRM Mugure to allow him to have the suspect held at Wang’uru Police Station.
“We are yet to establish through the Office of the Director of Prosecutions the true identity of the suspect before we prefer the appropriate charges against him,” Murugu further submitted.
Consequently, Mugure granted the application and ordered the matter be mentioned this Thursday.
It has also been established from reliable sources that the suspect is one Kimani Ngugi from Nyandarua County, a teacher and not a professor as he claimed.
Mwachofi reportedly told Ndambiri that he left the country when he was only seven-years-old for America hence his strong links with DLAMS.
He allegedly told Ndambiri that he had just returned to Kenya with a wealth in ICT and money that he had decided to give back to the community by assisting in the installation of the 5 G networks in schools for the e-learning project.
But to the shock of the court on July 10 when Mwachofi was first arraigned, he asked to be allowed to speak in Kiswahili which surprisingly he was better off than English yet he had claimed to have lived in America since age seven.
Police said they will be preferring against him fraud, impersonation and operating unregistered company charges.
