Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today's happenings.

Magical Kenya Open Day 3

The Magical Kenya Open continues today after a series of surprises and disappointments yesterday.

Not a single Kenyan made the cut following Round 2 of action yesterday.

However, the biggest spectacle of the day was two former Kenya Open Champions Justin Harding of South Africa and Guido Migliozzi of Italy were eliminated in a day of high drama as they both failed to make a mark this year. Harding is a two-time champion in Kenya while Migliozzi is a three-time DP World Tour winner.

The Magical Kenya Open is held under the umbrella of the DP World Tour (formerly European Tour) and is one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in Africa, attracting elite golfers from across the world.

The tournament kicked off on Thursday, February 22 at the par-71 Muthaiga Golf Club and will conclude on Sunday, February 25, 2024.

The 2024 edition has attracted 144 elite golfers from Kenya and around the world who are battling for the $2.5 million/Ksh36 million cash prize.

Namibia

President William Ruto will today attend the funeral service of the late Namibian President Hage G. Geingob who died in power on February 4, weeks after he was diagnosed with cancer.

The burial of marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum was moved from Saturday, February 24, to Friday, February 23 to enable Ruto to attend the marathoner's funeral service and also to fly to Namibia for the state funeral.

Explaining the move, a family spokesperson remarked that this was to align with President Ruto’s calendar.

Kiptum’s family noted that the President would be flying out to Namibia on Saturday although the information was not confirmed by State House.

“It will be a State function and the President will be in attendance. However, the date was changed from February 24 to 23 because the president will be available on that day. on Saturday he will be flying out to Namibia, to attend their late president's funeral," the family spokesperson explained.

Namibia's Minister of Information and Communication Technology Emma Theofelus on Thursday said Ruto is among 25 Presidents and Heads of government who confirmed that they will be attending the state funeral of the late Namibian President Hage G. Geingob in Windhoek.

President Geingob’s memorial service will be held today Saturday, February 24, at the Independence Stadium. The burial service and wreath laying will take place at the Heroes’ Acre monument on Sunday, February 25.

FKF Premier League break

After getting byes from the preliminary round, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League big guns led by Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards, and Tusker will return to Mozzart Bet Cup action as the round of 32 takes centre stage today and Sunday.

A total of 11 matches will be played across the country, as the FKF Premier League takes a break to pave the way for the domestic competition, whose eventual winner pockets Ksh2 million and the ticket to represent the country in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Today, there will be a double-header at Police Sacco Stadium with the main focus on the all-Premier League clash pitting Kenya Police against Posta Rangers before FC Talanta take on lower division side Bungoma Stars. FKF confirmed on Thursday that fans, who will attend the matches, will part with Ksh3000 for a VVIP ticket, Kshs 1000 for a VIP ticket, and Kshs 200 for a terrace ticket.

Police under Salim Babu qualified for the Round of 32 after defeating Vegpro 2-0 in the preliminary round while Posta under the tutelage of John Kamau dispatched Wisdom Soccer Academy by a similar margin. Bungoma Stars, who will face Talanta, were the underdog surprise of the preliminary round after sending home Bandari FC following a 2-1 victory at Sudi Stadium.

In other matches set for today, Silibwet will host Sofapaka, Compel will entertain Kajiado FC, while Bomachoge Borabu will come up against SS Assad.

Lang’ata Road

Section of Lang’ata Road in Nairobi County will be closed today as well as on Sunday.

In a notice, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) said the road will be closed between the T-Mall roundabout and the Madaraka Roundabout from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm.

The Authority said that the temporary closure will occur due to planned road maintenance works along the section.

"The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the public that a section of Lang'ata Road, along the service lane (Nyayo Stadium bound lane) between T-Mall Roundabout and Madaraka Roundabout will be closed," part of the notice read.

Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site.
