FIFA says Kenya risks ban after CS Amina sent Mwendwa packing, created caretaker committee at FKF
World football governing body, FIFA, has threatened to sanction Kenya, following the decision of Sports CS Amina Mohammed to disband the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).
FIFA states that its member associations are required to manage their affairs independently, devoid of undue influence from third parties.
"We would like to address our concern with respect to the abrupt announcement of the decision taken by the Cabinet Secretary. As a matter of fact, we deem fit to highlight that all FIFA member associations, including the FKF, are statutorily required to manage their affairs independently and without undue influence of any third parties.
Any failure to these obligations may lead to sanctions provided for in the FIFA Statutes, even if the third party influence was not the fault of the member association concerned," the statement read in part.
In the statement undersigned against the name of its Chief Members Associations Officer, Kenny Jean-Marie, FIFA adds that it was opposed to Amina's decision to replace a duly elected FKF Executive Committee with a Caretaker Committee.
FIFA further warned that Kenyan football and the individual involved in the undue influence on FKF's internal affairs risks suffering certain consequences of the unprecedented decision to disband the Nick Mwendwa led body.
The world football governing body states that it is only body mandated to dismiss executive bodies of member associations after conclusive investigations.
"It is up to FIFA alone, on the basis of serious and well-founded information as well as under exceptional circumstances, to order the dismissal of executive bodies of member associations followed by the appointment of a normalization committee," the body stated.
The body stated that should Amina's decision be upheld, they will have no choice but to submit the matter to the Bureau of FIFA Council for consideration and decision.
They have advised the Ministry of Sports and the embattled FKF Executive Committee to hold a meeting to address any concern both sides may have and, all together, to decide on a way forward for the sake of Kenyan football.
