Two lawyers are set to battle for Nyandarua County Assembly Speaker’s post in today’s election.

This is after six other would-be contestants were knocked out of the race after failing to meet the requirements.

The two; George Gaita and Steve Waiganjo will be seeking to replace Ndegwa Wahome who will not be seeking re-election after serving for 10 years.

“Only two of the eight made it after the other six failed either to get proposers or failed to avail clearance documents to show they comply with Chapter Six of the Constitution,” acting Assembly clerk Mukiri Muchiri said.  “Each of the candidates was supposed to produce clearance certificates from KRA, Helb, CRB, EACC, DCI and IEBC,” Muchiri added.

Muchiri explained that the IEBC certificate was among the mandatory documents because a candidate for the Speaker’s seat is supposed to also qualify to be an MCA.

Gaita and Waiganjo’s fate  will be decided by the 41 Ward Reps – 25 elected and 16 nominated. The MCAs will be sworn in first, at the Assembly in Ol Kalou town, before embarking on electing the Speaker, according to Mukiri.

Eleven of the elected MCAs were in the last Assembly.
