Former Matungu Member of Parliament Joseph Wamukoya is dead.

The former MP died at Bungoma Hospital on Monday aged 79 .

The late MP's widow Elizabeth Wamukoya confirmed his death and said he has been sick for years.

He was the first MP for Matungu Constituency between 1997-2002.

He was elected on Kanu ticket and was later appointed assistant minister in the Ministry of Lands and Settlement by the then President the late Daniel Moi in June 2001.

He unsuccessfully vied for the seat in 2002 but was trounced by David Were of Narc.

He also tried recapture the seat in 2007 but still lost to Were. He retired from politics the same year and ventured into private business.

Before making entry into politics, he was a lecturer at the University of Nairobi. He also taught at Michigan State University in the United States of America (USA).

Burial arrangements for the late MP are underway.
