From Thika Road to Jamhuri to Kilifi, Mburu marches on
Seventy-two-year-old Francis Mburu Mungai will pass for one of Kenya’s wealthiest persons if the value of the property he claims were to be cashed.
Had he succeeded in arbitration award granting him the 60 acres of land that is claimed by Telkom Kenya, the trader may have laughed all the way to the bank.
Although the plot was valued at Sh6 billion 10 years ago, the value could be upwards of Sh8 billion in the current market value.
However, this is not the only parcel that Mburu is claiming.
Through his Afrison Export Import Limited and Huelands Ltd, the man was paid Sh1.5 billion as first instalment for Ruaraka school lands.
The State had accepted to pay him Sh3.2 billion for the 14 acres where Ruaraka High School and Drive-In Primary School stand.
The matter is under active investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission and in court.
In their ruling, Justices Elijah Obaga, Benard Eboso and Kossy Bor, said the payment made by the Ministry of Education was irregular, as the land in which the two public schools stand belongs to the government.
Despite of the ruling, Mburu moved back to court in August 2018, seeking more than Sh36 billion from the State over the Ruaraka land controversy.
In the suit filed at the High Court, Mburu said Sh23 billion is the current value of the land and he wants a further Sh13 billion for loss of rental income and accrued interest.
The man, through New Agricultural Ltd, is also laying claim to a Sh10 billion land, known as Chakama Ranch in Kilifi County, that is currently inhabited by squatters.
“The next big thing at Francis Mburu is Chakama Ranch Land L.R No. 13472/3/4. Keep it locked here,” lawyer Apollo Mboya tweeted on June 20, 2018.
