Revelations that Kenyans are brewing illicit chang’aa in the Middle East have been met with mixed reactions in the country.

While some Kenyans expressed outrage over Foreign Affairs CS Alfred Mutua’s disclosure, others called on the government to get to the root cause of the situation.

Others questioned what they described as ‘Kenyans’ notorious habits’ while others hilariously commented on the issue.

According to Mutua, some Kenyans are brewing illicit alcohol for a living in some countries in the Middle East where consumption of alcohol is illegal.

“Do you know there are Kenyans brewing chang’aa in some of these countries? It breaks my heart that we are here debating about getting Kenyans there while there are Kenyans there with chang’aa dens, selling chang’aa to other Africans, an illegality of illegality in a Muslim country,” Mutua said in an interview with a TV station.

Kenyans immediately took to social media to give their opinion on the matter, even questioning the daring habits.

Vulnerable Kenyans

One of the Twitter user said: “Improve our economy and you will have no one brew chang’aa in the Gulf. This amounts to giving green light to whatever happens to Kenyans out there. When do the house helps get time to prepare this concoction?”

“This is what he wants us to focus on, not the fact that after forcing Kenyans abroad due to poverty, they won’t protect them from abusive, murderous employers. The most vulnerable Kenyan is the one that is abroad because they are on their own…” said a user, @PharaohMenya. Another said he is based in Qatar and the revelation is true, noting that Kenyans are notorious for this illicit activity and that a litre goes for 30 Qatari Riyals.

Others called on the Government to also apprehend foreigners conducting illegal businesses in the country.

“In the light of this we’ve numerous foreigners doing Kenyans dirty in full glare of authorities. When are you addressing this issue?” asked another, @Ntiks6.

Another user, Chief Maru wanted to know when the Government will address the light of Kenyans suffering in the Gulf countries.

“And what about the workers from Kenya and other countries stuck or rather caught up in slavery in these so called Gulf countries? When will we have a conversation about that?” asked one, Chief Maru.

“Kenyans are daring,” John Mwangi simply said.

Another social media user, @GoodpeepsMan said: ”So those house-helps in Saudi Arabia are dying because they are brewing chang’aa in the houses they work? Waziri, stop defending the perpetrators. What a wasted trip to Saudi.” Sir Wambua on Twitter called for the need to interrogate the situation.

“Let us not dwell much on the problems, let us dig on the cause of the problem and find a solution,” he said.

“But this has nothing to do with the ladies working in good faith to earn a living.  The chang’aa criminals should be dealt with in isolation. Let’s not create a red herring over the real issues,” noted another user. “We chase the bag,” read the comments.

Mutua said in the interview that there are dire consequences for conducting such illegal business in the Gulf, including coming in the way of the Government’s efforts to deal with the welfare of Kenyans living abroad.
