Gicheru ICC case to be heard in English, Swahili only as witnesses take stand
The case against, Paul Gicheru one of the lawyers who represented Deputy President William Ruto in the International Criminal Court (ICC), will only be heard in English and Kiswahili.
This is after the court’s registry announced that it will be really hectic for them to give room to witnesses who do not speak the two languages.
In addition, Marc Dubuisson who is the Director of the Division of Judicial Services within ICC Registry said that the court will only interpret the two languages.
“The Registry will be in a position to provide interpretation in these languages, using in-house resources as well as freelancers,” Dubuisson said.
ICC also through the registry also said that it will protect witnesses based on the kind of risk that will be briefed to the court.
The protection includes, getting the witnesses and close family members out of the country.
The case is expected to kick off on September 24 and will take virtually after he requested so.
It is judge Miatta Maria Samba the Trial Chamber III granted the suspect permission to follow the case virtually from Kenya as long as he links with the court’s registry so as he ensures that such a session is not delayed.
“The chamber reminds the defense, that it is in the responsibility of the defense to liaise with the registry and ensure the attendance of the accused via video technology to avoid any delay,” said the Judge.
Gicheru is facing witness tampering charges in ICC.
The court also said that some evidence which had been placed against DP Ruto post-poll chaos file can be used against Gicheru.
In addition, he also said that some evidence that had been filed against radio journalist Joshua Sang will be transferred to Gicheru’s case.
