Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho has said he is ready to shelve his 2022 presidential ambition and support his party leader Raila Odinga.

Joho said he was optimistic that Odinga will be elected President come 2022, and it was the only way coastal region affairs will be brought on board.

“As a region we are honoured to host Raila Odinga in Mombasa who is on a noble mission to unite Kenyans towards a more inclusive and cohesive nation,” Joho said.

Joho urged Odinga to bring on board all coastal region leaders in their quest to being participants in governance at a national level.

“I urge our party leader to bring on board coastal leaders. We do not want to continue being distant observers or followers, but participants in governance at a national level,” he said.

Joho made the remarks at the Wild Waters in Nyali, Mombasa on Saturday, September 18, when Odinga met ODM members to popularise his Azimio la Umoja ideology.

The county chief bewailed how the coastal region has been marginalised by subsequent governments, leading to youth unemployment, land tenure and economic sabotage.

“I call on all coast leaders to unite, for this will not only give us our fair share of a voice in national matters but also equitable representation in nation building,” Joho said.

Joho however, stated that he could still be on the ballot box if ODM party finds him suitable to lead the nation.

“ODM’s presidential candidate can either be Raila Odinga or me,” Joho said.

The governor, who is serving his second and final term, surprised many in February 2021, when he coded his ambitions to challenge Odinga to the ODM party’s ticket in the upcoming 2022 general elections.
