Vihiga county government yesterday allocated Sh50 million to support individuals who might get affected from the ongoing heavy rains.

The move came days after Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua stated stated publicly that counties should use the El Nino funds in their coffers to mitigate effects of El Nino, maintaining that the national government would not allocate them any funds to them.

Response committee

Vihiga Governor Wilber Ottichilo, said that the funds will help caution the effects of El Nino in the County and that he had already put in place a response committee to respond to any emergency that will be caused.

“We have allocated Sh50 million for El Nino Emergency and we have also factored money to fund various projects in the Supplementary budget for the 2023/2024 Financial Year,” said Ottichilo.

He revealed that Sh500 million had been allocated as ward development fund from which each ward will receive Sh20 million. The county has 25 wards. The budget states that Sh4 million has been allocated per bursaries and Sh50 million for Governor’s Scholarship.

In efforts to support sports, Ottichilo confirmed that Sh500,000 has been allocated per ward for sporting tournaments while Sh591 million has been set aside to settle pending bills.
