Gov’t closes schools in Nairobi, Mombasa ah**d of demos

The government has announced the closure of all day primary and secondary schools in Nairobi and Mombasa cities ahead of protests on July 19, 2023.

In a statement, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki said that the government was acting on intelligence that criminal elements were planning to disrupt peace around the schools in the two cities.

"The government has received credible security intelligence that criminal elements planning to unleash terror and violence on the public tomorrow intend to engage in armed skirmishes with security agencies around certain schools within Nairobi and Mombasa Cities," Kindiki stated.

"As a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of school children, it has been decided that all day primary and secondary schools within Nairobi and Mombasa cities shall remain closed tomorrow."

Kindiki said that the Ministry of Education shall announce the resumption of learning in the aforesaid schools upon assessment of the security situation in the course of tomorrow.
