Minority Leader in the National Assembly John Mbadi has admitted that the government misapplied money meant for fuel subsidy to other commitments causing a crisis in the country.

Speaking on a local television station on Tuesday evening, Mbadi said Parliament allocated Ksh30.1 billion for fuel subsidy in the last financial year, but only Ksh1.6 was used for the same.

"As Parliament, we allocated Ksh30.1 billion for fuel subsidy in the last financial year. Of these monies, only Ksh1.6 billion was used to stabilise petroleum prices and Ksh18.1 billion was used by the Executive to pay contractors.

"The question is, why was the money misapplied?" He posed.

Mbadi said the Executive should be held entirely accountable for the current fuel crisis.

"It is our duty as Parliament to allocate money to the Executive to spend. The Executive should have applied the money appropriately to avoid the current suffering of many Kenyans due to high petroleum product prices," he added.

Mbadi, however, said the National Assembly has moved with speed to pass the Supplementary Budget that has already been signed by the President.

"We had to allocate new money to cushion the situation through a supplementary budget," he said.
