“It is through hard work, cooperation from parents and teachers and God’s grace that I have managed to achieve these results,” said the country’s top student, Lewis Otieno Omondi, 14, shortly after Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu announced the results.

In an interview with People Daily, Omondi said he aspires to become a structural engineer in future.

“I have always wanted to be a structural engineer even though my favourite subject is Kiswahili,” he said.

Omondi selected Alliance High School as his first choice secondary school and hopes he will be admitted there.

His Kiswahili teacher, Amos Khayota, was elated.  “Lewis was very confident he would attain top marks. Immediately he emerged from the examination room, he confided in me that he was confident of posting good results,” said Khayota, the head of Kiswahili department at St. Peter’s Boys Primary School, Mumias.

Robinson Fwaro, 431, Christ the King Pri School, Bungoma County

Fwaro, 14, was surprised, though pleasantly, upon learning that he was the joint top student in this year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) results released yesterday.

“I never expected to be the best pupil in the country even though I have been performing well,” he said.

Fwaro attributed his sterling performance to discipline and hard work.

“Without discipline and hard work, as well as cooperation from teachers and parents, I would not have achieved this top grade,” he said.

Like Omondi, who also scored 431 marks in the examination, Fwaro’s first choice national school was Alliance High School.

He hopes to pursue structural engineering at the university.

It was song and dance at the school as teachers, parents and locals celebrated Fwaro’s performance shortly after the results were released.

School headteacher Stephen Chemongere attributed the school’s good performance to hard work.

“Bungoma has never produced the best pupil countrywide in KCPE. We are the first ones to do so and this success goes to our teachers and the Catholic church,” he said.

Keith Ochieng, 429 marks, Golden Elite Academy, Kisumu County

While Ochieng expected to attain at least 400 marks in this year’s KCPE examination nowhere in his wildest dreams did he expect to score 429 marks to be among the top five candidates nationally.

“I was sure I would get at least 400 marks but I never expected to score 429 marks. This is beyond my wildest imagination,” an overjoyed Ochieng told People Daily.

Tom Murithi, 428, Gilgil Hills Academy

At Gilgil Hills Academy in Nakuru County, top student Tom Murithi, who posted 428 marks, could not hide his joy saying his journey to becoming a neurosurgeon had begun adding that he intends to work hard in High School to ensure the dream comes true.

Larry Mburu, 425 marks, Good Shepherd Academy, Nyeri county

Larry, 14, termed hard work and discipline as his secret to success.

“It took a lot of effort. It was not easy but through hard work and discipline, I am today celebrating these good results,” he said.
