Heavy rains to subside for five days, says weatherman

The ongoing heavy rains will reduce in the next five days although some regions may receive downpours, the weatherman has said in the latest forecast released yesterday.
There will be enhanced rainfall over most parts of Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Laikipia, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma and Busia counties.
Director of Meteorological Services Stella Aura said near average to above-average rainfall is expected over the rest of the country, particularly in the Eastern and Coastal regions.
There have been flooding and occasional flash floods in Homa Bay and Kisumu counties in the last two weeks where close to 237 people have died and more than 160,000 left homeless.
The onset of heavy rains in the Central highlands including Nairobi, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Embu, Meru, Kiambu and Nyandarua is also expected to continue. The forecast shows it will end in the third or fourth week of May.
In parts of Narok, occasional rains are expected to continue and are likely to intensify in the next coming days.
However, it will be a relief for the North-Eastern region as the forecast predicts the areas will have sunny and cloudy intervals unlike the last few days where rains have left most people homeless.
Meanwhile, Coast Regional Commissioner (RC) John Elungata has toured flood-hit areas in Tana River county to assess the extent of destruction to properties and human displacement due to flooding.
The floods have left more than 5,000 people homeless and acres of maturing crops on the river bank submerged leaving locals at the mercy of relief aid.
Most of the roads in the flood-prone county have been rendered inaccessible.
The floods have since cut off sections of the main road in Bura sub-county disabling transport on the Mombasa-Hola-Garissa highway.
Elungata who was accompanied by area County Commissioner (CC) Oning’oi ole Sosio and Coast Development Authority boss Dr Mohamed Keinan urged residents to move to safer grounds.
