Holders got off to a good start as the Kisii County Term One Secondary School Games got underway at Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho, yesterday.

Back-to-back boys’ basketball champions Nyanchwa cruised to a comfortable 68-40 win over Nduru in their opening round robin match to leave their coach Kepher Mogire a delighted man.

“The boys are enjoying the game and they are in good shape to defend our title,” said Mogire.

In other matches, St Edward Nyabioto, who took 10 students to the national chess championship under the tutelage of coach Dennis Moebi, were full of confidence despite playing in the county championship for the first time.

Nyabioto lost to hosts Cardinal Otunga in their opening match but coach Moebi remains buoyant.

Cardinal Otunga had earlier hit Nyanturago 54-34 as Nyabisase beat Itiero 41-22, Magena lost 39-11 to Nyamagwa while Nduru thrashed Itibo 73-7.

In girls’ basketball, eight-time champions Itiero had an easy task, beating Nyabururu 45-12 to kick off their title defence on a high while Sengera humbled Nyanchwa 43-11

In girls’ handball, Senior Musa Nyandusi Kegati, who have won the last four crowns, launched their fifth title hunt brightly, seeing off Gesero 17-12 to leave team captain Monica Odumo purring.

“It was a good match but at the beginning, our opponents tried coming strong before we changed tack as the game progressed.

Our plan is to remain solid in defence and ruthless in front goal as we aim to lift the trophy again,” said Odumo.

In other matches, Gesero beat Kenyerere 16-5, Omobera edged Nduru 29- 24 while Sengera ran out 22-10 winners over Kiongongi. Nyabisase lost 14-12 to Kereri.

In the boys’ category, defending champions Tabaka overwhelmed Tendere, beating them 34-3 to leave coach Zakayo Nyabuto dreaming of bigger things.

“We want to win this title for the third time and keep it for good. Our plan to make it to the East Africa games this time round,” said Nyabuto.

In other boys matches, Nyamache beat debutants Kegati 16-14, Nyakome upstaged Bishop Mogendi 23-18 with St James Ichuni losing 21-12 to Ingonga.
