House to hold special sitting to honour President Moi

The opening of Parliament has been moved from Tuesday to Monday to allow members to attend the memorial service and funeral of retired President Moi.
National Assembly Leader of Majority Aden Duale has asked members to avail themselves for the sitting in order to push their resumption date to the House for the Fourth Session from Tuesday 11 to Thursday 13.
And in Senate, Leader of Majority Kipchumba Murkomen will move a motion for members to eulogise Moi.
Duale asked House Speaker Justin Muturi to appoint Monday as the day when the special sitting will be held as per the provisions of Standing Order no 29.
Reads the Letter in part: “To consider a motion whose notice is contained herewith, for the alteration of the calendar of the House proposing that the House resumes for the Fourth Session on February 13, 2020 instead of February 11, 2020.”
Following Moi’s demise, the Head of Civil Service and Chair of the funeral steering committee Joseph Kinyua announced that Moi’s body will lie in state in Parliament for three days from tomorrow to Monday for easy viewing.
Kinyua also announced that Tuesday, February 11 had been declared a public holiday to enable Kenyans to attend Moi’s memorial service at the Nyayo National Stadium while his burial, which will be a state funeral is scheduled will take place at his Kabarak home in Nakuru county on WednesdayFebruary 12.
The national memorial service, Kinyua said, will be an inter-denominational service led by the Africa Inland Church (AIC).
At the same time, the special sitting has been called to enable the reading of the message of President Uhuru Kenyatta delivered to Muturi, regarding persons nominated as Cabinet secretaries and Principal secretaries, which was not exempted from the provisions of Standing Order 42 at the time of the adjournment of the House on December 5.
In a recent Cabinet reshuffle the President appointed Former Nyeri Senator Mutahi Kagwe as the new Health CS while economist Betty Maina was appointed to head the Trade ministry.
The President also dropped Mwangi Kiunjuri as Agriculture CS and replaced Henry Rotich as the National Treasury boss. The committee on appointments chaired by Muturi is expected to vet the newly-appointed ministers.
