How ex-MP George Nyamweya lived large as a student at Nairobi School
Former nominated Member of Parliament George Nyamweya had a privileged life which his fellow mates at Nairobi School envied.
Nyamweya, according to Musalia Mudavadi, who joined the school in the second term of 1974, was their head prefect but his lifestyle at the boarding institution is something he says was hard to understand.
Mudavadi, in his memoir says Nyamweya, a long serving Democratic Party’s (DP) Secretary General not only had his own cubicle while other students shared dormitories, but also had a personal car which he took to school.
“He also had a car, a Citroen, which would often be seen elegantly parked outside his study room. While the rest of us lived in dormitories that were called “houses”, George Nyamweya, the head boy had an independent cubicle all to himself,” the former Sabatia MP says in his 418-page memoir.
Nyamweya, according to Mudavadi who had joined the school after just one term at Jamhuri High School, would even invite his friends from outside the school without any restriction from the administration.
“One of the things that surprised me the most was that the school head prefect, George Nyamweya, could smoke a pipe in the open,” writes the Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader, adding that teachers were not very conspicuous but the school ran very well.
