Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua now claims he used millions of his monies to campaign for President Uhuru Kenyatta in the 2013 and 2017 General Elections.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, August 2, Rigathi revealed that he was a personal assistant to President Uhuru Kenyatta during the 2002 General Elections where their friendship began.

When addressing questions concerning corruption allegations facing him, he said he is being targeted for supporting Deputy President William Ruto.

According to Gachagua, when he supported President Uhuru in 2013 and 2017 polls, nobody had an issue with him adding that his woes began when he declared his unwavering support for the DP.

“When President Uhuru Kenyatta took me to be his assistant in 2002, he found me doing business, no one was having issues with me. In 2013 I footed transports expenses for his campaign and nobody had any questions to ask me. In 2017, in the repeat poll, I told President Uhuru Kenyatta to leave Nyeri for me and I used my money for the campaign, nobody had an issue with me,” Gachagua said.

“I used my millions to hire vehicles and put billboards just to campaign for President Uhuru and nobody had issues with. My woes are as a result of my undying support for Deputy President William Rut,” he claimed.

The MP added that it is not a crime to do business involving millions of shillings given that many foreigners are handling multi-billion contracts and are not accused of any wrongdoing.

“I want to tell Kenyans that doing business is not a crime. Chinese are doing business with the government worth Ksh40 billion. French people are building expressways worth Ksh62 billion, nobody is saying they are criminals. Therefore, when Gachagua does business, because he is an African, it should not be a problem,” he added.

His sentiment came on the very day he accused the state of sabotaging his work by blocking him from launching and inspecting development projects in his constituency.

He accused the government of trailing him with the police unnecessarily and also blocking him from discharging his mandate as MP.
