IEBC rules out creation of new constituencies before 2022 general elections
Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has ruled out creation of new constituencies before 20222 general election.
However, the commssion will carry out boundary delemination that is expected to be completed by March next year.
Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Referendum Bill is proposing a creation of 70 new constituencies.
IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati, while presenting the commission’s views before the JLAC in April 2021, faulted the BBI task force for coming up with the number of the constituencies without their input.
The commssion said it needed two years to complete the process.
BBI proponents said they used population census figures generated by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) to decide the counties to get the additional constituencies.
“The commission did not give such a report to the BBI team. The only document we have on boundary review is the Andrew Ligale report issued on March 4, 2012," Chebukati said.
The electoral body further said voter registration exercise will start in July, 2021 following the allocation of Ksh14.6 billion.
