Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga yesterdaay made a raft of pledges to the North Eastern region, including sustainable drought mitigation measures as well as increasing the Equalisation Fund.

While receiving a delegation at Chungwa House led by Education Chief Administration Secretary Noor Hassan, Raila said the region has a lot of resources, which are yet to be exploited.

“This is a region that can sustain itself if proper programmes are introduced. As a leader I will keep a keen eye on building dams that will provide water for irrigation,” he said. With sufficient water supply, Raila said the region has the capacity to have enough produce that can even be exported.

At the same time, the ODM leader said his administration will build abattoirs and leather houses in the region.

“Instead of ferrying their animals to Nairobi, we will ensure they have slaughterhouses to ease the cost of transport,” he said.

On the equalisation fund, Raila said if elected President, he ensure is allocated enough like other regions.

Also present at the event was the former anti-graft chief Halakhe Waqo, who endorsed Raila’s candidature, saying the ODM leader has a remarkable track record.
