Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria said yesterday he will not retire from politics once his term in office ends and indicated he will vie for the presidency in 2022.

Speaking in Murang’a town, Wa Iria said  he has what it takes to lead the country and  that his development record speaks for itself.

The governor said he has his own party—Civic Renewal Party (CRP)—which he shall use to vie for the top seat, adding that he shall mobilise other leaders from the area to use the party, too.

Dynamics of politics

Wa Iria said being the only governor who secured a second term the Central region shows he has the mettle to “move to a higher level.”

“There has been too much debate on who is going to take over from President Uhuru Kenyatta and I will be one of those vying for this position,” he said.

Wa Iria said for the eight years he has been in leadership, he had learnt the dynamics of politics and come 2022,  he shall be a sharpened political student ready to  engage in active politics.

“Those who think I will be going home after this got it wrong because I am in politics to stay,” he said.

Expand projects

The governor said he has a plan to expand the projects he has been undertaking in Murang’a to the national level for all the Kenyans to benefit.

“The slogan for my party is ‘equality for all’ and this should ensure everybody benefits from the resources we have,” he said.

The governor, however, expressed his displeasure over the remarks by some leaders who he accused of disrespecting the President.

“I am saddened by some leaders who have been attacking the President openly. This is not acceptable,” said Wa Iria in reference to Kandara MP Alice Wahome.

He said leaders from the Central region need to sober up and stop playing petty politics, which he termed as destructive.

The Kandara MP has been in the eye of a storm for criticising the Jubilee administration, with some daring her to quit her position if she is dissatisfied with the ruling party.
