Interior ministry bags Sh8.2 billion for police officers’ recruitment

Security agencies and the department for health and medical services are among the institutions to reap big in the next fiscal year’s budget.

 According to a report of the Budget and Appropriations Committee (BAC) on the Budget Policy Statement, the security agencies have been given additional funding to take care of recruitment of police officers as well as for general administration and support.

 The National Police Service (NPS), the report shows, has been given an additional Sh8.2 billion for the recruitment of police officers, police modernisation and operationalisation of the National Police Hospital (NPS).

 “Additional Sh5.2 billon (recurrent) for recruitment of 10,000 police officers. Additional Sh2 billion (recurrent) for police modernisation. Additional Sh1 billion (recurrent) for operationalisation of NPS Hospital,” reads the report.

 The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has been given an additional Sh4.36 billion comprising of Sh1.4 billion for motor vehicle leasing, Sh700 million for operations and management of 369 sub counties, Sh134 million for operationalisation of the newly gazzeted offices, Sh625 million for multi-agency security operations and Sh1.5 billion for security operations.

 National Police Service Commission has been allocated an additional Sh150 million to cater for various operations within the service.  “Additional Sh50 million (recurrent) to cater for logistics on police recruitment. Additional Sh50 million for decentralisation of NPSC cons selling and wellness services. Additional Sh50 million for human resource audit.”

Independent Policing Oversight Authority has been given an additional Sh100 million operations and management.

 With regards to the state department for medical services, the committee proposed an additional allocation of Sh7.872 billion out of which Sh3.792 billion is for recurrent expenditures while Sh4 billion is for development expenditure.

Of the Sh7.872 billion, Sh1.9 billion will go towards the procurement of family planning and reproductive health commodities while Sh4.962 billion will go towards national referral and specialized services comprising of Sh50 million  for the purchase of orthopedic spines beds at Spinal injury hospital,  Sh1.5 billion to KNH, Sh700 million for operations and management at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital.
