It’s do-or-die for Vihiga Queens, must beat Rivers Angels
Kenya’s representative in the inaugural 2021 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League, Vihiga Queens, have a huge task to accomplish today, when they take on Nigerian Rivers Angels, in a do-or-die Group B final match, scheduled at 30 June Stadium in Cairo, Egypt.
The Kenyan Queens are seeking to seal their place in the semifinals of the historic women’s club continental championship in the 5 pm kickoff match, and coach Charles Okere is confident of beating the Nigerian champions, urging his players to play their hearts out, and emphatically win the encounter, to stand a better chance of qualifying.
“We’ve prepared the girls psychologically, and they’re physically fit for the match. We’ve also worked with them technically, and of course, they understand the tactics we’re going to employ in this game. So, going into this match, honestly, it’s the dream of every coach to win each and every game. So, that’s exactly what we want to do, because we’re well prepared, and of course, our target is to win this tournament, the historic and the first-ever championship in Africa. So, we’re ready,” Okere said ahead of today’s crucial match.
With the group-wide open, and with Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa on top with six points, and two goals, Vihiga coming second on three points, and one goal, and in similar statistics with third-placed Asfar of Morocco, while Rivers Angels fourth with no point and -4 goals, any of the two teams from the group have mathematical chances of progressing to the knockout stage, and Rivers Angels are spoiled to spoil Vihiga Queens’ chances.
“We have lost two matches, and this is not good for us, and we’re not happy. We, therefore, can’t just afford to come to this tournament without winning any match. So, hopefully, we just have to win our next game, so that we won’t be as if we came to this place to donate points. So, we have to win our next match,” Rivers Angels’ Maryann Ezengau told a presser in Egypt ahead of today’s encounter with Vihiga Queens.
