A lecturer in the Department of Environmental Health and Disease Control at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology has bagged the inaugural Kofi Annan Global Health Leadership Programme (KAGHLP) of the Africa CDC.

Dr. Jackline Mosinya Nyaberi won the one-year fellowship after a competitive selection process that attracted over 600 applicants.

Some 20 fellows were finally picked to participate in the initiative that brings together the African Union Commission (AUC) and Africa CDC, which jointly launched the KAGHLP in May 25, 2020 in partnership with Kofi Annan Foundation.

The fellowship, the first under KAGHLP, entails online learning and mentorship in-person learning sessions at the Africa CDC in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and other leading health organisations in Africa.

The fellowship “seeks to model aspirational African public health leaders in Africa in acquiring advanced skills and competencies needed to strategise, manage and lead public health programmes that will positively transform public health in Africa,” states the AUC Director, Dr. John Nkengasong in a letter to Nyaberi.

According to AUC, Africa CDC and Kofi Annan Foundation, “the aspiration is for the Kofi Annan Public Health Fellows to contribute to and lead the implementation of a new public health order for Africa, and in turn develop the next generation of public health leaders.”

Dr Nyaberi is one of the three Kenyans selected for the 2021/22 cohort and the only one flying the flag from the academia.

The other two namely Dr. Josea Rono and Judith Omondi-Anyona are from private sector health organizations.

Nyaberi will join other fellows from Africa in the 12-months programme which aims to develop exceptional thought leaders who will become public health champions in Africa.
