Joho warns State agencies against frustrating business at Mombasa port

Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho.

Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has accused government agencies at the port of Mombasa of allegedly frustrating investors through exorbitant charges that have since made it hard for them to do business.

He accused Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) officials of creating hard time for traders importing consolidated cargo through the port of Mombasa.

“I want to tell KRA, KPA and Kebs and any other entity, please make it easier for our people to do business, do not make it a nightmare for people,” said Joho.

High charges

Joho said operations at the port have become a nightmare for importers because some charges were so high, especially for those who import consolidated cargo from overseas.

He said when some Kenyans unite to import consolidated cargo they “are subjected to very punitive charges.”

“You can engage people because I have information that some charges are so high especially to import consolidated cargo, can you invest in technology to ensure that people do business smoothly.

Make it easy so that they can pay more taxes,” said Joho at the 2019 ASK Mombasa International Show in Mkomani  yesterday. He said people would be required to sacrifice for the government to achieve its Big Four agenda.

Joho’s sentiments come weeks after President Uhuru Kenyatta, who opened the show yesterday, warned KPA officials over alleged corruption, saying the government was keenly following activities at the port.
