Trans Nzoia County Assembly Speaker Joshua Werunga has dismissed allegations that he is sponsoring election violence against his opponents.

Speaking to the media after being cleared to run for the Trans Nzoia Senatorial seat, Werunga stated that the allegations were propaganda perpetrated by his opponents.

"My opponents who have no agenda sensed defeat and resorted to propaganda. I am a law-abiding citizen, I know very well that election violence is a criminal offence and whoever is saying I engage in it should table evidence," he stated.

The former Mayor of Kitale Municipality said he is bound by the elections code of conduct and he can't breach the code because he risks disqualification.

His sentiments come after his opponent, Musoke Muliro who is vying for the same seat on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket alleged that Werunga hired goons to attack him twice.

"I have fallen victim to Werunga's acts of election violence twice. Such people do not deserve to hold any public office," Muliro said.

Muliro who called for the enforcement of the elections code of conduct also urged voters to carefully vet candidates in order to make informed decisions ahead of the August 9 polls.

Other candidates cleared to vie for the Trans Nzoia Senatorial seat include Allan Chesang' (UDA), Henry Ole Ndiema (FORD Kenya), Hellen Yego (CCM), Peter Chemuigut (Independent) and Cheptoo Morei (Independent).
