Joyce Laboso remembered with cancer education fund
Former Bomet County governor, the late Joyce Laboso, has been honoured with a cancer education fund.
Speaking during the memorial service for the late former Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso at Koru in Kisumu on Thursday, July 30, Governor Hillary Barchok said his administration values the input different partners have in remembering and having her legacy realized.
The fund which was launched on Tuesday seeks to have an increased number of oncologists from the current 35 to 1,000 across the country.
The fund is aimed at supporting 47 professionals from each of Kenya’s counties annually.
During the ceremony, only a few guests were allowed with others being locked out due to the protocol set by the government in preventing the spread of Coronavirus.
Those in attendance included Kisumu Woman Representative Rosa Buyu, Gender Chief Administrative Officer Rachel Shebesh, Bomet Speaker Wesley Kiprotich and a number of local MCAs led by Majority Leader Josphat Kirui.
Barchok conveyed tribute messages from President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto.
In his message, the President said the late Laboso was a servant leader and urged other leaders to emulate her virtues.
On his part, Barchok narrated how has managed to fit into the shoes of her predecessor since she left.
"I came in when I was a greenhorn but I have tried to follow in her footsteps and I am glad that with close working relationships with other leaders from the county, we have made great progress," he said.
Edwin Abonyo, the husband of the late Laboso, said since the demise of his wife the family has continued to progress well despite contending with the pain that came with the death.
"I am still grieving and will continue to grieve for many years over the loss of my wife," he said.
