Jubilee Senators who snubbed a Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting at State House chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta a fortnight ago appeared before the party’s disciplinary committee yesterday to defend themselves over accusations of undermining the party and its leadership.

The five: Millicent Omanga, Victor Prengei, Falhada Dekow Iman, Naomi Jillo Waqo and Mary Seneta Yiane defended stated their cases  at the party headquarters.

They risk being kicked out of  the party,  if the committee chaired by Mombasa lawyer Muchai Lumatete finds them guilty of misconduct after snubbing the Senate PG.

Addressing a press conference at Jubilee headquarters, party Secretary-General Raphael Tuju announced that the committee was in session and will give the accused senators an opportunity to defend themselves just like a court of law before it renders its decision.

“We have to follow the laid down rules and regulations as required by our party constitution, the Political Parties Act and the constitution of Kenya,” Tuju said

He added: “It is a court process like any other court proceedings. They will make their pleadings and have a chance to be defended.

If we do not go through it the right way then the outcome can be found wanting and be challenged in a court,” Tuju however refuted claims that they were meddling in the affairs of the committee saying “they manage their own time, calendar and summons to those they want to see at whatever time.

“As a secretariat we have no control of how they manage their time. I have to keep distance just in case, I will be required to make certain decisions at the end,” he reiterated.

On his part Senate Majority Whip Irungu Kang’ata  said the committee had three senators by the time of going to press and were due to hear the remaining two.

“We had hearing for the first three senators, matters closed and the committee has retired to make a determination which will be communicated to three,” the senator observed.
