Construction of a new Level 4 hospital in Juja, Kiambu, has began, bringing relief for hundreds of thousands of residents who have been seeking healthcare in other far-flung facilities.

The 200-bed hospital, to cost Sh210 million, will be upgraded from the existing Gachororo Health Centre and is expected to serve a population of more than 378,000, according to the 2019 census.

Governor Kimani Wamatangi, while presiding over the ground-breaking ceremony, said the facility is expected to ease the workload at Gatundu and Thika Level 5 hospitals which have been facing an influx of patients from Juja.

“This will be the first hospital of its kind in Juja constituency and once complete will be a comprehensive medical hub comprising an outpatient wing, inpatient facilities, a radiology department, a maternity wing and two surgical theatres among other facilities and is set to transform the provision of healthcare services around here,” said the Governor.

Wamatangi added that the new hospital comes with a fully-equipped medical laboratory and is touted to bring an end to residents’ trips to other far-away facilities in search of these services.

At the same time, the county chief disclosed that his administration has put in place measures to eradicate theft of medical supplies in Kiambu health facilities which will now be streamlined upon completion of the county’s Central Medical Store at Ruiru Level Four hospital.

“For a long time the county has suffered from unreliable supply of drugs and non-medical supplies due to lack of a Central Medical Store to receive and manage medical supplies as well as coordinate their distribution to health facilities across the county, monitor usage and make timely orders,” Wamatangi pointed out.

He also announced that his government is installing the Hospital Information Management System to monitor healthcare services delivery to Kiambu residents including monitoring medical supplies availability in all county health facilities as well as medical personnel.
