Public Service and Gender Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa has lifted the ban on night-mourning events popularly known as disco matanga in Kilifi.

Speaking in Kilifi at the weekend during the official launch of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, Jumwa said the ban has negatively affected disco matanga business.

“We have a number of people who took loans to invest in this business and they have been appealing to the government to lift the ban because they have been unable to service their loans,,” the CS noted. The ban was imposed in 2019 by former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i after Kilifi County Referral Hospital reported over 18,000 cases of early pregnancies. The government had also said records indicated that drugs in Kilifi are sold and peddled in such events and young girls have also become susceptible to defilements.

Former Malindi MP faulted the move and instructed police to arrest minors found in the night- mourning events.

“Kenya Kwanza government promises to uplift small-businesss not to suppress them through the bottom-up module. The ban has negatively deprived many people of their livelihoods,” Jumwa said Jumwa.
