Kabogo questions how terror suspects grew beards in one week
Former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo has questioned how the Kamiti prison fugitive terror convicts could have grown beards in just one week from the much publicised escape from prison.
The Tujibebe party leader could not fathom how the three terror convicts had unkempt beards, given that prisons don't allow a certain hair length once you are a convict.
"These guys were in Kamiti maximum prison as convicts 5 days ago? If so, they must have the fastest growing beard," Kabogo pondered.
Some prisons believe that inmates can hide contraband in their long hair, so they have implemented rules about hair length. This means that prisons should have a barber shop or salon on site.
The three terror suspects, Musharaf Abdalla Akhulunga alias Shukri, Mohamed Ali Abikar and Joseph Juma Adhiambo alias Yusuf were arrested by Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) in Kitui on Thursday, November 18.
They had escaped from Kamiti Maximum Prison on the night of November 14, 2021, and barely three days later, president Uhuru Kenyatta fired Prisons boss Wycliffe Ogallo.
Prior to the firing of Ogallo, seven wardens had been arrested in connection with the dramatic escape and police had also offered Ksh60M for information leading to the arrest of the three convicts.
Musharaf Abdalla was serving a jail term since 2012 over his participation in a failed attempt to conduct a terrorist attack targeting parliament building.
Mohamed Ali Abikar was arrested following his involvement with the Garissa University attack in April 2015.
The third escapee Joseph Juma Adhiambo alias was arrested in 2019 while attempting to enlist with the Al Shabaab terror group.
Detectives believe that they were on their way to Somalia before they were nabbed.
Interior CS Fred Matiang'i has since announced that the three convicts will face fresh charges following their capture on Thursday.
