Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM)  leader Kalonzo Musyoka can breathe easy now.

At least, at this instant, he feels the tag watermelon has found its rightful owner after years of painstaking efforts to shake off the political nickname, which signifies a person who could not have a permanent, stand on national issues.

People Daily caught up with the former Vice-President at his party’s Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Secretariat in Karen last week where, first of all, he appreciated that he was not tasked – before cameras - to share his feelings on the changing fortunes as Deputy President William Ruto seems to have earned the watermelon tag over the BBI Amendment bill 2020. “I am glad you spared me the embarrassment,” he said.

He continued:  “You can now agree with me that the tag had been given to the wrong person.

But today, I am glad that the tag watermelon - which was used to demean my position on many issues, mainly on national matters – has found its rightful owner.”

The Wiper leader had endured years of political discrimination for failing to make solid decisions, but with the entry of Ruto as the new ‘watermelon’, Kalonzo can sleep easy.

That Ruto gives different views at different times about the intended amendments to the Constitution is leaving little room for political analysts to really have a clear picture of him is no secret anymore.

The DP has been known to be that politician, who, for a long time had been known to stand by his word, whether right, or wrong, but his recent hop knobbing about the intended changes to the Constitution has baffled even the closest of his allies.

“New watermelon?” A local newspaper posed on its main cover story.

A screenshot of that headline is to date trending on various social media platforms with majority of the commentators affirmatively acknowledging the intended message.

On another social media platform, Baringo Ward Rep Ernest Kibet, a close ally of Kanu chairman Gideon Moi, was quoted describing Ruto as a person who lacks a clear stand concerning BBI.

According to Kibet, the DP had joined Kalonzo as the next individual to be branded ‘watermelon’ tag over his dilly-dally position on BBI process.

He noted that Ruto had now become a ‘Watermelon Two’ after Kalonzo, the bona fide owner of the tag.
