Kandara MP wants Muturi to resign after coronation

Kandara Member of Parliament Alice Wahome wants National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi to resign after being coronated Mt Kenya region spokesman.

Wahome argues that being made the spokesman contradicts his role as the Speaker and he should therefore settle for one position.

The lawmaker observed that taking up the role of the community spokesman will bring disrepute to the National Assembly and smearing it with cultural politics is not acceptable.

“The Speaker cannot seclude himself to be the spokesperson for the Mt Kenya region as this will counter his role at the national level,” she said.

Speaking in Murang’a county yesterday, Wahome said she believes Muturi’s coronation was a political affair and there are hidden hands behind it.

She, however, stated that this was a misguided and miscalculated move and the Speaker should just reflect back from it, adding that this is a political strategy and could backfire.

“This is definitely going to affect his work, because he will be compelled to serve the interests of the people who have put him there, whereas the Speaker should be neutral,” she stated.

Further, the Kandara MP said there were no adequate consultations among local leaders and residents to have Muturi bestowed as the spokesman.

She said this was evident after several leaders and elders opposed the coronation, but those who had planned for it went ahead to crown him.

“I never attended any forum in which we discussed such an issue. This only means it was planned by a few people who are pushing their own interests,” she said.

Wahome also wondered why Muturi could not wait for elders who were fighting his coronation to come to a consensus with those supporting him.

“Why did he rush to go the shrine and be coronated instead of waiting for the elders to settle their differences?” she asked.
