Kenya Meat Commission has reverted to the Ministry of Agriculture, two years after it was transferred to the ministry of Defence, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi has said.

The CS, who toured the Kibarani KMC factory in Mombasa on Friday, however clarified that the Kenya Defense Forces will continue managing operations at the commission facilities.

Linturi hailed as “commendable” the strides achieved since the military took over the Kibarani facility in August this year.

The CS observed that KDF successfully managed to cut down the cost of rehabilitating the facility from Sh1.2 billion initially quoted by public works to Sh159 million, a cost-cutting achievement he said was as a result of the military utilising available resources and making use of its personnel.

“Let me tell you that the President has issued a directive and stated that KMC is under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development. KDF is part of the government of Kenya and we must respect the good job that they have done,” Linturi said.

Linturi said KDF had done a commendable job in refurbishing and revamping the KMC facilities and assured that his ministry will continue to work with the military to deliver quality services.

“At the end of the day, the most important thing is to ensure that when mwananchi supplies KMC with livestock they get paid without delay and at the right price. I must appreciate what the team has done here is commendable and I wouldn’t have a problem with KDF at all,” Linturi said.

On livestock offtake programme, Linturi said the government had released Sh350 million to purchase livestock from pastoralists and other farmers facing biting drought and alleviate the burden of losing animals.

He called on Kenyans who are stranded with their livestock amidst drought to take them KMC.
