Kibra seat vacant: Speaker Justin Muturi has declared
Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi has declared the Kibra parliamentary seat vacant, paving the way for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to organise a by-election.
The seat fell vacant following the death of former MP Ken Okoth last month.
The Speaker is mandated to issue a writ 21 days after the death of a MP after which IEBC has to prepare the by-election within three months.
ODM battle
The battle for the ODM ticket, the dominant party in the constituency, has attracted several politicians including former MPs.
Among those said to be interested in the seat are Imran Okoth (brother to the late MP), Eliud Owalo, former Embakasi South MP Irshad Sumra, former Senator Elizabeth Ongoro, ODM secretary-general Edwin Sifuna and ODM youth leader Benson Musungu.
Owalo, who served as head of Opposition leader and ODM head Raila Odinga in the 2013 presidential campaign secretariat and chief campaign manager has since fell out with the party brass forcing him to shift from the party.
