Over 40 suspects linked to Kilgoris v******e arrested – Kindiki

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has stated that over 40 suspects who were involved in the latest tribal clashes in Kilgoris, Narok County, have been arrested.

The CS, who is on a security tour in Narok County, confirmed that the government has made remarkable progress in dealing with insecurity and insurgency in the region.

Alongside the arrests made, Kindiki also said a General Service Unit station has been established to curb the insecurity in the volatile place.

New GSU camp

"The government has established a General Service Unit (GSU) camp at the Nkararo-Enoosaen cutline following a spate of violent attacks over perennial communal border disputes. Security enforcement officers are directed to ensure peace and safety in Kilgoris Constituency and mop up all weapons in the hands of residents," Kindiki said.

"47 culprits linked to the recent violence that led to deaths, injuries, and destruction of property have been arrested, and security agencies are instructed to apprehend all persons, including political and community leaders, who are inciting, orchestrating, or funding violence. Any historical grievances, including land disputes, should be resolved peacefully and within the law."

According to Kindiki, the insecurity issue can be conclusively dealt with if local political leaders get involved.

He spoke after a briefing with by Narok County Security and Intelligence Committee and a consultative session with political and community leaders in South Rift.

"Community and political leaders must partner with security officers in resolving the perennial communal border dispute in Kilgoris Constituency. Any leader inciting violence, their social stature or political persuasion notwithstanding, will be apprehended and prosecuted," the CS added.

Security mission

Recently, Kindiki visited the North Eastern counties of Mandera, Garissa, and Wajir where he promised that his docket was ready to deal with extremist groups and the Al-Shabab.

"Through collaborative partnerships with community and religious leaders, security agencies will crush violent extremists, combat cross-border crime, and facilitate development in the North Eastern region," he said.

"The government will spend at least Ksh20 billion to enhance the capacity of security officers on the frontlines through the modernization of their equipment, technology, and capacity to effectively tackle complex security challenges such as terrorism and banditry."

He also toured Lamu County on a similar mission as he interacts with local leaders across the country in a bid to find long-lasting solutions in areas prone to tribal clashes.

His ministry has had to deal with various issues, including the Shakahola masacree in Kilifi County and the banditry scare in West Pokot, Turkana, and Baringo Counties.

Azimio protests

Recently, he has been a man under more scrutiny given the Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya coalition protests that have rocked the country in the recent past. Kindiki has been criticized by opposition leaders, especially due to how the police have responded to these demonstrations.

But he has been backed by politicians in the Kenya Kwanza camp, who have also called for the arrest of top Azimio leaders for the organization of the protests.
