KNUT second vice chair John Wesonga dies in hospital

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) second Vice National Chairperson John Wesonga has passed away.

In a statement, the union's Secretary-General Collins Oyuu announced that Wesonga died at the Nairobi hospital after battling a long battle with colon cancer.

"It is with profound shock and dismay that we announce the death of our 2nd Vice National Chairman Brother John Wesonga at Nairobi West Hospital after being diagnosed with Colon Cancer," Oyuu stated.

While announcing his demise, Oyuu commiserated with Wesonga's family and friends. He mourned the deceased as one who will be missed owing to the role he played in the education sector.

"On behalf of the National Steering, the NEC and the entire teaching fraternity, may I convey our heartfelt condolences at this time. Other arrangements will be conveyed once completed. May the Almighty God rest his soul in eternal peace," Oyuu said.

Wesonga was elected as KNUT's second vice chairperson in June 2021. At the time, he served alongside Stanley Mutai.

Also, Wesonga served as the provincial secretary of the then-Western Provincial Council before becoming a National Executive Council (NEC) member.

He will be known for his commitment and dedication towards improving teachers' working conditions.
