More than half of Kenyan Premier League clubs say that they will only take part in a FIFA sanctioned league.

In a joint meeting held on Wednesday morning, 12 CEO’s from top KPL clubs vowed not to take part in the Football Kenya Federation Transition Committee organised league, citing squandering of resources.

In a statement read on behalf of the clubs by acting Gor Mahia CEO Raymond Oruo, the clubs say that the move will benefit all interested parties.

Oruo said, “We have unanimously resolved as Kenyan Premier League clubs that the teams will not take part in any competition that is not recognized by the world governing body, FIFA because it is a waste of investment and time and very little returns coming through. What we are saying is that the 18 clubs of the Premier League have decided that we will only play the 2022-2023 season in a properly sanctioned FIFA league because that is the only way our teams and players are going to benefit.”

CEOs led by Jeckton Obure(Mathare United), Victor Bwibo(AFC Leopards) Raymond Oruo (Gor Mahia) and  Linda Ambiyo(Kariobangi Sharks) stressed that most clubs have suffered under the current setup and many clubs were not ready to stretch this further.

Nairobi City Stars CEO Patrick Korir said, “The truth of the matter is that we clubs have been preparing for next season, we have been given several kick off dates and we will probably be given several more kick off dates, we have no idea by whom...that is not for us to say. The day a FIFA sanctioned league will kick off, we will all be ready and we will get to the pitch to honour the fixtures.”

The country is currently serving a FIFA suspension for government involvement in football with the world governing body revealing that the suspension will be lifted when the previous FKF regime led by Nick Mwendwa is reinstated.

City Stars CEO Patrick Korir noted that teams are currently in preparation for next season but they will only commence the campaign when the league is recognized by FIFA.“The truth of the matter is that we clubs have been preparing for next season, we have been given several kick off dates and we will probably be given several more kick off dates, we have no idea by whom...that is not for us to say.

The day a FIFA sanctioned league will kick off, we will all be ready and we will get to the pitch to honour the fixtures,” added Korir.
