The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is planning to change its name as it seeks to enhance service delivery to taxpayers.

Board chairman Francis Muthaura says that the institution is looking to drop the term 'Authority' in favour of 'Service' because it does not capture the real role which is to offer services to millions of Kenyans.

“The name makes one feel like we are commanding Kenyans. Commanding is not the real role of KRA,” Muthaura said.

He says the agency should strive as servants to work closely with Kenyans in achieving their collective goal.

“We are the servants of the people who are the taxpayers. We are giving them services, and it is for this reason that we strongly believe that our role is to deliver service to the people,” Muthaura said.

Muthaura also denied that Kenyans are being overtaxed.

"We cannot talk about taxes without looking at the other side of the equation to assess whether we are overtaxed or not. The answer is no, Kenyans are not overtaxed," Muthaura said.
