Kenya Revenue Authority(KRA) on Wednesday denied claims that it is considering to tax dowry payments in a bid to raise revenue.

Blogs on December 3 popularized allegations that KRA was moving to tax dowry.

The rumours elicited dissatisfaction among Kenyans spelling doom for the move.

In a Twitter post on December 4, KRA dismissed the claims as fake and strange.

"Hii story hata sisi tumeiskia tu (even us we have just heard this story," KRA posted on Twitter.

KRA is not taxing dowry

While some social media users thought that the move to tax dowry was unwelcomed and unfair, others expressed hope that it would raise the much-needed revenue.

Juma Edwin wrote: "But think of it as a good idea, that's a sector you've always ignored. We need revenue.'

In response to a user, who had expressed shock over the allegations, KRA said that they too support marriages.
