A parliamentary team has been tasked to investigate claims that the government is planning to ban used wear, popularly known as mitumba.

Speaker Moses Wetang’ula directed the Committee on Trade, Industry and Cooperatives to take up the matter after Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan demanded to know the reasoning behind the alleged plan.

“I direct that this matter be referred to the Committee on Trade, Industry and Cooperatives,” said the Speaker.

Hassan said since the Trade, Investment and Industry Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria hinted the government could ban mitumba, traders have been worried about their businesses.

Bottom up

Hassan said the CSs statement went against President William Ruto’s bottom up economic plan.

“I am requesting a statement regarding the sale of mitumba threats. About two million Kenyans are dependent on second-hand clothes and are very concerned over the statement by trade CS which contradicts the ruling party’s bottom up,” he said.

Added: “I, therefore, condemn the utterances of the CS as this has caused the traders a lot of pain. These hardworking Kenyans need to be assured of their jobs and that is why I am asking for your help on this.”

Leader of Majority Kimani Ichung’wah said the Committee on Procedure and House Rules should speed up the process of amending the Standing Orders to allow Cabinet Secretaries to respond to questions in Parliament.

“The CS should be here to tell us whether it is the media or him who made the remarks that mitumba should be banned,” said Ichung’wah.
