Laikipia County Governor Joshua Irungu has officially signed the return to work formula with doctors and specialists who were sacked 46 months ago.

Speaking while signing the return to work formula on Wednesday, August 31, Irungu confirmed that the County Government of Laikipia, the Laikipia County Public Service and the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) had reached an agreement to reinstate the doctors back to work.

"More than 10 doctors will be back to work beginning September 1, 2022, others will be back by September 10. We have also made arrangements with doctors who have been working elsewhere that they will have one month to resign if they are willing to come back and work in Laikipia County"Irungu stated.

On his part, KMPDU Secretary-General David Atella reaffirmed that the new county government of Laikipia had agreed to give the people of Laikipia county quality and efficient services by protecting and renumerating the health care workers.

"We have sat down with the county government for the last two weeks and have discussed on the modernities of return to work formula, by the end of the year we shall have all the doctors and consultants back to service, "Atella added.

The Laikipia County Public Service board through its chairperson Mumbi Mwago ascertained that the biggest challenge has been the lack of specialist doctors such as orthopaedic surgeons, she added that their return will guarantee that the two referral hospitals in Nyahururu and Nanyuki have the right services.

"I acknowledge that this is a very good success not just for the doctors but for the entire public service because we feel like people should have confidence that things are going to work out," Mumbi added.

The medics downed their tools in 2019 over what they termed as the non-implementation of Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the County Government.

They were later fired by the then County Boss Nderitu Muriithi.
