The planned Jubilee Party nomination for the vacant Lakeview ward seat in Naivasha, hangs in the balance after the top officials cancelled it and instead opted for interviews.

However, the aspirants and area residents have rejected the move terming it as dictatorial and against the Constitution.

The interviews have been slated for tomorrow. The seven aspirants are now threatening to go to court to block the move, with allegations that the party had already settled for one of the candidates.

Already, the aspirants have paid Sh50,000 as nomination fee and have used a lot of money in their campaign.

Read mischief

The seat fell vacant after the death of Karanja Mburu, the area MCA in a road accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway in April.

The Nakuru branch party chairman David Manyara confirmed the more adding that a five-man committee had been chosen to conduct the interview.

He said that the decision was reached by the party’s top leadership as there was no time to prepare for the nomination exercise.

“The party headquarters has decided that there will be an interview on  tomorrow to pick our candidate as there is no time and resources for a nomination exercise,” he said.

Some of the aspirants who declined to be named however read mischief in the move.

“We have used a lot of money to pay and campaign for this seat for some people to just come up with a decision for over 18,000 voters in this ward,” said one of the aspirants.

Meanwhile, the war of words in the party deepened with Naivasha MP Jayne Kihara calling on the embattled Secretary General Raphael Tuju to resign.

While backing Deputy President  (DP) William Ruto in the infighting within the party, Kihara said that they would not be cowed by Tuju.

Speaking in Naivasha, Kihara an ardent supporter of the DP termed Tuju as a stranger in the troubled party.

Laughable

She said that Ruto was among those who fought for the formation of the party and was free to visit Jubilee House anytime he wanted.

“It is laughable to hear Tuju calling on the DP and some MPs to keep away from Jubilee House yet we are the ones that pay for the rent and his salary,” she said.
