More than 10,000 AstraZeneca doses were administered on Saturday, arguably the biggest number of the vaccine given since the programme kicked off in March this year.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said yesterday 13,050 first doses were administered, adding that 794 second doses also were administered.

“Cumulatively, 2,396,064 vaccines have so far been administered across the country as of yesterday.

Of these, total first doses are 1,615,687 while second doses are 780,377,” he said, yesterday as the number of positive cases from the disease dropped by half to 646 from 1,286 in 24 hours.

Yesterday’s positive cases were drawn from 6,039 samples. This also saw the positivity rate come down to 10.7 per cent from 15.5 per cent in 24 hours when samples tested were 8,310.

“Total confirmed positive cases are now 229,009 and cumulative tests so far conducted are 2,312,027,” the CS said as the number of deaths stood at 30 yesterday.

The CS said the cumulative fatalities now stand at 4,497.

He said 255 patients have recovered from the disease with 200 from the Home-Based Isolation and Care programme while 55 are from various health facilities countrywide.

“Total recoveries now stand at 212,036 of whom 170,934 are from the Home-Based Care and Isolation program, while 41,102 are from various health facilities countrywide,” Kagwe said.

Nairobi takes the biggest share of all the positive persons with 207 cases followed by Garissa (74) and Kitui (68) further raising concern on the rising Covid infections in that part of the country.

Kiambu county reported 42 cases followed by Nakuru (25), Machakos (24), Kajiado (23) and Mombasa (21).

A total of 2,063 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 9,024 are under the Home-Based Isolation and Care programme.

Some 149 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 77 of whom are on ventilatory support and 72 on supplemental oxygen. No patient is under observation.

By yesterday the uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose stood at 48.3 per cent with the majority being males at 55 per cent while females are at 45 per cent.  The proportion of adults fully vaccinated is 2.9 per cent.
