Lungalunga MP Khatib Mwashetani  has withdrawn  from the Kwale  governor’s race in support of Kenya Ports Authority Engineer Lung’anzi Chai.

Speaking at Lungalunga Primary School, he said he made the decision after wide-consultations with local leaders.

“Yes! I have quit the governorship race and I have decided to support Eng Lung’anzi because his agenda and mine were almost the same,” he told the People Daily.

He also said that from now  on, his team will join Lung’anzi’s campaign team.

“My campaign team will join Lung’anzi’s  team and we will work together until he captures the seat in next year’s polls,” he explained.

Mwashetani also disclosed that he will not defend his seat and will instead spearhead Deputy President William Ruto’s presidential campaigns in the region.

“I am not interested in any political seat but I will fully campaign for DP Ruto and Lung’anzi in Kwale county as the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party coordinator,” he said.

During his whirlwind tour of Coastal region at the weekend, Ruto presented Lung’anzi with UDA cap as a symbol of welcoming him into the party.

However, he also introduced all the political aspirants vying for various seats in the county in the 2022 elections to the public saying that they are  part of the hustler nation.

“Some of the 2022 Kwale aspirants are here and we will be sailing with them in the Hustler nationship,” said Ruto.

“We are hustlers, therefore, let us support one another in 2022 during the General Election, vote for all the UDA party candidates from top to the bottom,” he said.

Lung’anzi said that he will serve the people of Kwale regardless of their tribe or religion.

Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya and his Deputy Fatuma Achani gave Ruto’s tour a wide berth.

The two, instead held a meeting at Ramisi Ward in Msambweni constituency not very far from Ruto’s event.  Mvurya supports Achani for the governorship in the next election.

A source told People Daily that Mvurya and his Deputy did not attend the DP’s function because they were not involved in its planning.

Other 2022 Kwale county gubernatorial aspirants are Agriculture Principal Secretary (PS) Hamadi Boga, Kwale Assembly Speaker Sammy Ruwa and business man Gereza Dena.

Boga has settled on Tourism and Wildlife PS Safina Kwekwe as running mate.
