Lemotit junior athletes keen to emulate Chebet
The 5000 metres World Under-20 champion Beatrice Chebet recently joined the senior ranks, and back at her Lemotit Camp in Londiani, Kericho County, junior athletes are now striving to follow in her footsteps.
Head coach Paul Kemei, says the camp has received significant interest from budding athletes determined to emulate the achievements of one of their own.
Despite the immense disruptions that might have been brought by the Covid-19 pandemic, there is a rejuvenated hope that soon all will go to normal and the rescheduled World Under-20 Championships will go on.
The event which was scheduled for Nairobi in July 7-12 was postponed owing to the spread of coronavirus and is likely to be held in 2021.
“I will be lying if I say we have not been affected hugely by the pandemic. We finished last year on a bright note, with a lot of optimism going to the Championships year.
In our camp our athletes had prepared well since the start of the year when they participated in cross-country build up and we were now eyeing the World Under-20.
We remain hopeful the Championships will go on soon,”said Kemei.
Coach Kemei says he has 26 athletes who are preparing for the event, he has high hopes to many, it will be a turning point to their great futures.
“Chebet was one of their own who has risen through the ranks to finally conquer the world. If that is not motivation, then I don’t know what else needs to be done.
Most importantly despite the event being pushed to 2021, I am at peace knowing all my athletes still within the age bracket for next year’s Championships,” assured Kemei.
Lemotit Camp is one of the 19 camps that was selected by Athletics Kenya (AK) to prepare prospective athletes for the global showpiece in the programme .
