Lobby group threatens to demand for overhaul of KPA board

A day after Treasury rejected names of nominees for Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) managing director position, Commission for Human Rights and Justice (CHRJ) has threatened to move to court and demand a complete overhaul of the KPA board of directors.

CHRJ executive director Julius Ogogo claims that the board as its constituted may not deliver a transparent and credible process owing to alleged divisions and conflict of interests. KPA board is led by Chairman retired Gen Joseph Kibwana.

“CHRJ demand the immediate overhaul of the entire Board of KPA failure to which we going to Court .The PS Treasury should stamp his authority and constitute anew before the appointment of the MD of KPA. The Kibwana-led team cannot be trusted with KPA recruitment,” said Ogogo.

In a move that would likely send the process to another legal process, Ogogo says the Board exhibited incompetence by handing over names of candidates who had failed to attain the 70 per cent pass mark therefore it should be disbanded.

“Can they deliver after conducting a shroud interview being nullified for their own selfish interest? The pass mark was set at 70 percent and if nobody managed to attain the pass mark, the board was expected to cancel the process but not to request the CS to appoint failures,” posed Ogogo.

However, the KPA board chairman Joseph Kibwana (above) defended his team stating that they diligently performed the job as per the law.

“Our job is very simple, to just give the results to the CS full stop, we don’t decide, we don’t do anything,” Kibwana told People Daily through a phone interview.
