London Distillers effluent fails to meet set standards
London Distillers Ltd is on the spot light after tests on effluent it discharges into public sewers failed to meet environmental safety standards.
The tests, sanctioned by the Water Resources Authority (WRA), were carried out between November 4 and 16, 2019. Some 140 samples were collected from the LDK effluent treatment plant and subjected to tests at the Central Water Testing Laboratories at Industrial Area in Nairobi.
“All the eight samples for which guidelines are available, the results of the treated effluent (post treatment) are within the threshold of five parameters namely Ph, temperature, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids and biochemical oxygen demand,” said the report signed by WRA assistant technical coordination manager Kenneth K’Oreje, adding that:
“On the other hand, for chemical oxygen demand, sulphides and ammonianitrate the samples were above the limits.” “Consequently, the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) doesn’t consistently meet the threshold guidelines for some parameters,” Dr K’Oreje said. Yesterday, Edermann Property confirmed it has forwarded the findings to the National Assembly Committee on Implementation.
“We have already forwarded the report to the committee of Implementation for necessary action as required,” said the firm’s communications official Joseph Baraza.
