Looking at the brighter side of things

Happy couple.

We can overcome, was the message going out when Brenda and Brian appeared on TV as the first two COVID-19 survivors last Wednesday.

This was indeed a moment of triumph for our nation amid the fear that has gripped us.

This is nothing new bearing the fact that according to medical professionals, about 95 out of 100 people that get the corona-virus, if managed well will survive. Only three to five cases may end up in death.

But going by the fear that this virus has generated, it appears like it is the other way round.

That is how the human brain seems to work focusing us only on the negative rather than the positive side.

So seeing Brenda and Brian sharing their story was such a breath of fresh air.

It’s funny that when two love birds are courting, they tend to see only the positives in each other and rarely the negatives.

That’s why when you try to advice someone not to marry that guy or that chic you become their enemy.

You see just like fear makes us only see the negative, the feelings of love makes us to only see the positives in each other.

They say “love is blind, but marriage is an eye opener”. It’s only after we are married long enough that vindu vichenjanga (loosely translated to ‘things change’) and now all over a sudden, we begin seeing only the negatives and struggle to see the positives in our spouse.

So in order not to make a mistake, my advice to those singles looking forward to that long-term relationship, is to please open your eyes and try to see those things that pose potential danger in your relationship in the future.

Those who are already hitched, please try not to dwell so much in the dark room developing those negatives.

Come out into the light, into the open, and like Brenda and Brian did in showing us that this COVID-19 thing can be conquered, see the positives in your spouse.

Have hope that no matter how bad the situation may look in your marriage, that thing that is trying to divide you, with a positive attitude, can be overcome so that the two can continue to be one!
