Kenya international pair of Gaudencia Makokha and Brackcides Khadambi are the champions of the third leg of the Deep Heat National Beach Volleyball Tour, Mombasa 2022 homologated series.

Makokha and Khadambi, however, were forced to dig deep to stop resilient pair of impressive Phosca Kasisi and Yvonne Wavinya 2-1 in an entertaining final played at the New Big Tree beach, Mombasa, to claim the honours.

“We’re happy to lift the Mombasa Tour after missing it in Makueni but in sports when you lose, you go back to the drawing board. So we worked on our mistakes and that’s why we emerged the better side,” Makokha said.

“Our partnership is more than just playing together. I learn things from her and she does the same.”

The duo, who represented the country in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, took the first set 21-18, but resilient Kasisi and Wavinya fought back to win the second set 21-17, but the champions had saved the best for the last as they dug deep to take the third set 16-14 for the coveted trophy.

Makueni Tour champions Naomi Too and Veronica Adhiambo finished third to win bronze following a convincing 2-0 straight-sets win of 21-15 and 21-9.

Makokha and Khadambi had not yet won any series, having missed the opening leg in Homa Bay Tour w and finishing runners up in the second leg in Makueni Tour.

In the men’s category, the Kenya international duo of Ibrahim Oduor and James Mwaniki have crowned champions after coming from a set down to beat the high-flying duo of Cornelius Kiplagat and Nicholas Lagat.

Kiplagat and Lagat took the first set 21-16 but Oduor and Mwaniki who are in the national men’s provisional squad fought back to take the second and third sets.
